Before choosing a slide-on camper or canopy, it pays to know how much your ute is allowed to carry. Most dual cab utes leave the factory with less payload than people expect, and accessories use up a lot of it.
GVM, kerb weight and payload
- GVM (gross vehicle mass) is the most your ute may weigh fully loaded — people, fuel, water, gear and camper. It is set by the manufacturer and shown in the owner's manual and on the vehicle's compliance information.
- Kerb weight is the ute empty, with a full tank of fuel.
- Payload is roughly GVM minus kerb weight: everything you can add, including passengers.
Every accessory comes out of the payload: bull bar, winch, drawers, long-range tank, tray, canopy and camper. The only reliable way to know where you stand is to weigh the ute as you drive it, at a public weighbridge.
Options from lightest to heaviest
| Option | Weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium ute canopy | approx. 75 kg | No tent; lockable storage |
| Stealth pop-up canopy | approx. 100 kg | Tent in the roof, tub free below |
| Integrated pop-up canopy | approx. 140 kg | Taller hard-shell tent |
| Slide-on camper — DIY / BASE / PRO | Confirmed with your quote | Depends on length and options |

When a GVM upgrade is worth a look
If you want a BASE or PRO slide-on on a dual cab ute, a GVM upgrade may be worth discussing with a specialist. Upgrades are available for many popular utes; how they are certified, and whether it is easier before or after first registration, depends on the ute and your state. A local 4x4 workshop or GVM upgrade provider can tell you what applies.
How we help
- We give you the camper weight for your exact configuration in writing, before you order.
- We suggest lighter options — DIY, fewer extras, part-full water tank — if payload is tight.
- For utes with plenty of payload, such as the LandCruiser 79, any package suits.
FAQ
What is GVM?
Gross vehicle mass: the maximum the ute may weigh fully loaded, as set by the manufacturer.
How do I work out my payload?
Roughly GVM minus kerb weight — but accessories reduce it, so weigh your ute at a public weighbridge as you drive it.
Does a GVM upgrade increase what I can carry?
Yes — a certified GVM upgrade raises the legal maximum. Requirements vary by ute and state, so ask a GVM upgrade provider.
Is a canopy lighter than a slide-on camper?
Yes. A canopy or pop-up canopy is the lightest way to sleep on your ute.
