Truck campers for half-ton and mid-size trucks

How to read your payload sticker, and which toppers and pop-up campers suit a Tacoma, F-150, Tundra or Ranger.

Most pickups in the US are half-ton trucks — F-150, Silverado 1500, RAM 1500, Tundra — or mid-size trucks like the Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado and Gladiator. Almost any camper can be built to fit their beds. The real question is how much weight the truck is rated to carry.

Start with your payload number

Open the driver's door and find the Tire and Loading Information placard on the door jamb. It says: "The combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed …" — that figure is your payload. Two trucks with the same badge can differ by several hundred pounds depending on cab, bed, engine and trim, so always use the number on your own truck.

From that payload, subtract everyone who rides in the cab, then everything you carry: water, food, recovery gear, bikes, and accessories already fitted such as a steel bumper, winch or larger tires. What is left is what a camper can use.

What we usually suggest

  • Mid-size trucks (Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado, Gladiator, Frontier): a truck topper or pop-up topper, or a DIY slide-in shell you fit out light.
  • Half-ton trucks (F-150, Tundra, RAM 1500, Silverado 1500): any topper, or a DIY or BASE slide-in after a payload check.
  • 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks (F-250/F-350, RAM 2500/3500, HD): any package, including PRO.

Ways to keep the weight down

  • Start with DIY or BASE and add only the options you actually use.
  • Travel with the water tank part-full and fill up near camp.
  • Buy a lithium battery locally — it is lighter than lead-acid, and it cannot ship inside the camper anyway.
  • Skip heavy extras you can carry outside the camper, such as a second fridge or a large awning.

FAQ

Can a half-ton truck carry a slide-in camper?

Often, yes — a pop-up slide-in is built for exactly this. Whether a specific package fits depends on your truck's payload, so we check the camper weight against your door-sticker figure before you order.

Do airbags or stronger springs increase my payload?

They can improve ride height and handling under load, but they do not change the payload rating on your door sticker.

Is a pop-up topper lighter than a slide-in camper?

Yes. A pop-up topper is the lightest way to sleep on your truck; a slide-in adds a floor, interior and living systems.

How do I find my payload?

Use the Tire and Loading Information placard on the driver's door jamb. It is specific to your truck's configuration.
