Truck camper vs topper vs rooftop tent

Setup time, bed space, comfort, weight and price — the three main ways to sleep on a pickup, side by side.

There are three common ways to sleep on a pickup: a rooftop tent on bars or a rack, a pop-up truck topper with the tent built into its roof, and a slide-in pop-up camper with a floor and interior of its own. Each one asks something different of your truck and your budget.

Rooftop tent

The lowest-cost way to sleep off the ground. It mounts on roof bars or a bed rack, leaves the bed free, and fits cars and SUVs as well as trucks. You still need somewhere to keep gear dry and locked — which is why many truck owners pair a tent with a topper.

Pop-up truck topper

A hard aluminum topper with the tent built into its roof. Closed, it looks like a regular camper shell, so the truck works as a daily driver; open, you sleep on top while the bed below stays free for gear. It is the lightest way to get a lockable bed and a tent in one.

Slide-in pop-up camper

A complete camper body with its own floor, insulation and interior. You can sit inside out of the weather, cook, and run a heater, fridge and solar. It slides out on four jacks when you need the bed back. It is the most comfortable option and asks the most of your truck's payload.

How to choose

  • Weekend trips and a daily-driver truck: a pop-up topper.
  • Long trips, cold weather or two people living out of the truck: a slide-in camper.
  • Lowest budget, or a car or SUV: a rooftop tent.

FAQ

Is a pop-up topper warmer than a rooftop tent?

The tent fabric is similar, but you climb in from a hard topper rather than a ladder outside, and gear stays dry and locked below.

Can I stand up in a pop-up camper?

In a slide-in pop-up camper, yes, with the roof raised. In a pop-up topper you sleep in the roof tent and use the bed below for storage.

Which option is easiest to remove?

A rooftop tent or topper clamps on; a slide-in camper comes out on four hand-crank jacks.
